Skolisser

Skolisser is the Danish term for shoelaces, the cords or strips used to secure shoes by threading through eyelets, hooks, or other lacing systems. They are a common component of most types of footwear, from everyday sneakers to formal shoes, and also play a role in fashion and function.

Materials and forms vary. Common materials include cotton, polyester, nylon, and leather, each offering different durability and feel. Shoelaces come in flat or round profiles, with braided variants providing additional strength. Widths typically range from about 2 to 6 millimeters, while lengths are chosen to fit the number of eyelets on a shoe, commonly from around 60 to 180 centimeters. Some laces are treated for water resistance or colorfastness and may include features such as reflective threads for visibility.

Usage and maintenance. Laces are threaded through the eyelets and tied to secure the shoe on the foot. They can be tied in standard bows or alternative knots, and several no-tie or elastic variants exist for convenience. To prolong life, avoid excessive washing or heat, and allow laces to dry thoroughly if wet. When fraying occurs, laces can be replaced or trimmed and re-seated with new aglets or tips.

Cultural and practical context. Shoelaces are a ubiquitous component of modern footwear, used for fit adjustment, style, and function. They vary widely in color, pattern, and material to suit individual preferences, sports needs, and fashion trends.
