Skismans are fictional humanoid entities appearing in fantasy and speculative fiction. They are depicted as beings tied to division, fracture, or thresholds, often functioning as custodians of hidden knowledge or as agents of change during times of upheaval. The concept is used across various media with varying properties.

The etymology derives from schism, implying rupture. In some adaptations the name is retained from folklore, while others coin new roots. No single canonical origin.

Physical description. Skismans are described as slender or androgynous beings with irregular, fissured skin, sometimes with crystalline veins or glassy eyes. Some depictions grant them partial translucence or shadowy presence. They typically move with deliberate, measured steps and may carry ritual items.

Habitat and behavior. They are commonly associated with fault lines, ruins, or places where realms or dimensions touch. They are cautious around living humans, prefer nocturnal activity, and may form small, secretive communities. Their behavior ranges from ambivalent to protective; some act as wardens of thresholds, others as tricksters.

Powers and roles. They are sometimes described as able to sense or manipulate rifts, echoes of past events, or memories. In storytelling, Skismans can function as antagonists, mentors, or guardians, influencing events by closing or opening pathways.
