Skillstos

Skillstos is a modular framework and online ecosystem designed to map, develop, and certify practical skills across sectors. It emphasizes competency-based progress, portable credentials, and employer-friendly verification.

Origin: Conceived by the Skillstos Consortium in 2022-2023, with involvement from universities, vocational schools, and industry partners. The project aims to address gaps between formal education and workplace demands.

Core components: a formal ontology of skills, a library of learning modules called Skilllets, an adaptive assessment engine, and a credentialing system issuing digital badges or certificates. Users build learning paths, complete projects, and obtain badges when milestones are met. A skill graph shows prerequisites and relationships.

Interoperability: Adheres to open standards for credentials (Open Badges) and supports LMS integrations and API access. Data privacy and portability are emphasized.

Impact and reception: Used by higher education institutions, coding bootcamps, and employers to assess and recognize competencies. Advocates cite increased transparency and flexibility; detractors point to the need for rigorous validation, potential credential inflation, and costs of maintenance.
