Skibsbyggeri, Danish for shipbuilding, is the construction and repair of ships and boats. It encompasses naval architecture, hull construction, propulsion systems, electrical and mechanical outfitting, and sea trials. Shipyards vary in size and specialization, from small recreational boathouses to large oceangoing facilities.

Historically, skibsbyggeri moved from wooden hulls to iron and steel, enabling larger ships. The industrial era expanded capacity through mechanized production, standardized components, and new joining techniques. Modern yards use modular construction, computer-aided design, automated welding, and integrated logistics.

The typical process starts with design, specification, and cost estimation. Hull sections or blocks are fabricated in workshops and later joined on a slipway, dry dock, or building berth. After the hull is assembled, systems such as propulsion, power, plumbing, electrical networks, and safety gear are installed, followed by testing and sea trials before delivery.

Activities include the construction of new ships, repair and refit work, and conversions to meet new requirements. Shipyards work under the oversight of classification societies (for example, Lloyd's Register, DNV, or ABS) to ensure structural integrity, safety, and environmental compliance. The industry is influenced by supply chains, labor markets, financing, and regulatory regimes.

Current trends include digital design and twin technology, green propulsion and ballast water management, and increased use of modular construction. Offshore energy support vessels, fast ferries, and containerships continue to drive capacity in many regions.
