Skateway

Skateway, commonly known as the Rideau Canal Skateway, is a large natural ice skating rink along the Rideau Canal in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It runs for about 7.8 kilometers through the city center toward Dow's Lake and is widely described as the world's largest naturally frozen skating rink.

Ice safety governs its operation. The Skateway opens only when ice thickness and weather conditions meet safety standards, and closures may occur after thaws, rain, or storms. It is managed by Parks Canada in partnership with the City of Ottawa, with support from volunteers and the public. When open, the rink is free to use and features a network of warming huts, washrooms, and concession stands along its length, plus illuminated sections for night skating and distance markers to help skaters gauge progress.

History and significance: The project emerged in the early years of Ottawa's Winterlude celebrations and has grown into a defining element of the city's winter culture. The Skateway is a major draw for residents and visitors and is commonly cited as a centerpiece of Canadian winter tourism.
