Skannauskoodit, also known as scanning codes or simply codes, are a broad category of identification markers designed to be read by optical scanners. These codes are ubiquitous in modern commerce and logistics, facilitating rapid data capture and processing. The most common type is the barcode, characterized by parallel lines of varying widths and spacing. These lines represent alphanumeric data, typically a product identifier such as a Universal Product Code (UPC) or European Article Number (EAN). When scanned, the pattern of lines is translated into a digital format, allowing for quick lookup of product information, pricing, and inventory levels.

Beyond linear barcodes, two-dimensional (2D) codes have gained significant traction. QR codes, a popular example of 2D codes, can store much more information than traditional barcodes, including website URLs, contact details, and even small amounts of text. These codes utilize a matrix of squares, dots, or other geometric patterns. Other 2D codes include Data Matrix and Aztec codes, each with specific applications and data capacities.
