Skalmodellen

Skalmodellen refers to a scale model, a replica of a real object created at a reduced size to study, design, test, or present a concept. The term is used in Danish and Norwegian contexts to describe both physical models and digital representations that preserve the essential dimensions and relationships of the original.

Scale and fidelity are defined by a scale factor, such as 1:50 or 1:100, which indicates how many units on the model correspond to a unit on the real object. Scale models are employed across disciplines, including architecture, engineering, automotive and aerospace design, maritime modelling, film and theater, and education. They can be physical constructions crafted from wood, plastic, cardboard, or metal, or digital models generated in computer-aided design (CAD) software and rendered for visualization.

Production methods vary from traditional handcrafting and kit-building to modern fabrication techniques like 3D printing, laser cutting, and CNC machining. Finishing details, such as painting and textures, are used to improve readability of proportions and materials.

Limitations and considerations include the fact that some physical properties do not scale linearly. For example, aerodynamic effects or structural behavior may require adjustments or separate testing at different scales to ensure the model provides meaningful insight. The choice of scale balances factors such as accuracy, cost, time, and the intended purpose—communication, analysis, or fabrication guidance.
