Skalarriga

Skalarriga is a fictional coastal region and political unit used in a collaborative fantasy worldbuilding project. It is described as a land of rugged coastlines, cascading fjords, and a broad central plateau. The name Skalarriga has no single canonical etymology, and scholars propose several in-universe origins.

Geographically, Skalarriga spans a northwest shoreline and an inland highland. The coast features sheltered bays and rocky promontories, while the interior contains the White Plateau, with glacial-fed streams and pine forests. The climate is temperate to cool, with strong maritime influences and frequent fog.

Historically, Skalarriga was settled by seafaring communities who formed coastal leagues. It later entered personal union with neighboring realms and achieved a constitutional regional government in the modern period. Today, authority rests with a regional assembly and a governor who acts as head of state; local councils handle municipal administration.

Economically, Skalarriga relies on fisheries, timber, and mining, supplemented by shipbuilding and growing ecotourism. The region promotes crafts such as boat carpentry and tuning, and it maintains protected nature areas to conserve salmon habitats and boreal forests.

Population is diverse, with two main cultural groups traditionally known as Skalari and Mirenn. In common use are the Skalari language and a regional dialect of Mirenn. Cultural life centers on maritime festivals, communal feasts, and a tradition of polyphonic singing and boat rituals.
