Tasks are the objectives or actions to be accomplished, which may be discrete steps, goals, or sequences of operations.

In this framework, tasks are contingent on both the situation and the conditions. Changes in the environment or in available resources can alter which tasks are appropriate, feasible, or optimal. Modeling typically uses state representations, where actions move the system from one situation-condition combination to another, and planning or decision algorithms select tasks based on goals.

Applications span robotics, autonomous systems, disaster response planning, education, business process management, and user experience design. Example: in an emergency rescue scenario, the situation is a flood event with affected populations; the conditions include limited boats, damaged infrastructure, and weather forecasts; the tasks are rescue, triage, and supply delivery.

Approaches to modeling include formal languages, ontologies, situation calculus, temporal logic, and constraint programming.
