Sinte

Sinte is an alternate spelling found in some languages and historical texts for the Sinti, a Western European Romani ethnic group. In modern English usage, the group is usually referred to as the Sinti. The form Sinte may appear in transliterations, bibliographic records, or regional spellings.

Most Sinti live in Germany and Central Europe, with communities in France, Austria, the Czech Republic, and neighboring countries, as well as a global diaspora. The Sinti are part of the broader Romani peoples but are recognized as a distinct subgroup with their own historical paths, dialects, and cultural traditions. Their language is Sinti-Romani, an Indo-Aryan variety with substantial influence from German and local languages, existing in several regional dialects.

Historically, the Sinti have faced discrimination and persecution. During the Holocaust, Sinti and Roma were targeted by the Nazi regime, leading to mass killings, forced labor, and systematic persecution. After World War II, many Sinti communities continued to face marginalization, although recognition and rights movements have advanced in recent decades.
