Singlespindle

Singlespindle refers to a type of automatic screw machine that uses a single rotating spindle to hold and machine a workpiece. This machine is designed for high-volume production of small to medium-sized parts, typically with complex geometries. The spindle rotates a bar stock while various cutting tools are brought into contact with the workpiece to perform operations such as turning, drilling, milling, and threading.

The key characteristic of a singlespindle automatic is its single spindle. This spindle rotates and is fed forward as the workpiece is machined. The tooling is typically mounted on a tool slide or turret that moves independently to perform the required machining operations. Because there is only one spindle, each workpiece must complete all the machining operations before being cut off and a new workpiece is fed into the spindle. This sequential operation can limit production speed compared to multi-spindle machines for very high volumes.

Singlespindle automatics are known for their precision and ability to produce intricate parts. They are commonly used in industries such as automotive, aerospace, medical devices, and electronics for manufacturing components like screws, bolts, shafts, and fittings. The setup of a singlespindle machine can be time-consuming, making it most economical for medium to large production runs where the initial setup cost can be amortized over a significant number of parts. Modern singlespindle automatics often incorporate CNC (Computer Numerical Control) for greater flexibility, accuracy, and ease of programming.
