Silmäongelmat, commonly referred to as eye problems, encompass a wide range of conditions that affect vision and eye health. These can range from minor irritations to serious diseases that may lead to vision loss. Common symptoms include blurry vision, double vision, redness, itching, pain, light sensitivity, and discharge from the eyes.

One of the most prevalent eye problems is refractive errors, such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. These occur when the eye does not focus light correctly onto the retina, often correctable with eyeglasses or contact lenses. Presbyopia, an age-related condition where the eye's lens loses flexibility, makes it difficult to focus on close objects and is also a common refractive issue.

More serious conditions include cataracts, which cause the lens to become cloudy, and glaucoma, characterized by damage to the optic nerve, often due to high intraocular pressure. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) affects central vision and is a leading cause of vision loss in older adults. Other concerns include infections like conjunctivitis (pink eye), dry eye syndrome, and diabetic retinopathy, a complication of diabetes that damages blood vessels in the retina.

Early detection and treatment are crucial for managing many eye problems. Regular eye examinations by an ophthalmologist or optometrist are recommended to monitor eye health and catch potential issues before they significantly impact vision. Lifestyle factors, such as protecting eyes from UV radiation and managing chronic conditions like diabetes, can also play a role in maintaining good eye health.
