Sildistust

Sildistust is the Estonian term for a dental bridge, a fixed dental prosthesis designed to replace one or more missing teeth by anchoring to adjacent teeth or implants. The bridge restores function and aesthetics, distributes biting forces, and helps preserve the alignment of surrounding teeth.

Types and materials vary. A traditional fixed bridge uses crowns on the neighboring teeth (abutments) with a pontic in between. A cantilever bridge is supported on one side only. A Maryland bridge is bonded with wings to adjacent teeth. Materials include porcelain fused to metal and all-ceramic options such as lithium disilicate or zirconia, chosen for strength and appearance. The choice depends on the location, bite, aesthetic demands, and the health of surrounding teeth.

The procedure typically involves evaluation and tooth preparation of the abutment teeth, taking an impression, placing a temporary bridge, laboratory fabrication, trial fitting, and final cementation. Enamel and, in some cases, dentin are reduced to provide retention and space for the prosthetic. Good oral hygiene is essential to maintain the bridge and prevent decay on abutments.

Advantages of sildistust include a fixed, natural-looking result that closely matches surrounding teeth and preserves adjacent tooth structure by avoiding implants in some cases. Disadvantages include the irreversible alteration of healthy teeth for abutments, potential stress on abutments, risk of decay or periodontal problems if oral hygiene is poor, and eventual need for replacement or refitting.

Maintenance involves regular brushing, flossing with a threader or interdental brush to clean under the pontic, and periodic dental checkups. Alternatives include implant-supported crowns or removable partial dentures, depending on prognosis and patient preference.
