Sideswipes

A sideswipe is a type of motor vehicle collision where the side of one vehicle makes contact with the side of another. These collisions often occur when one driver drifts out of their lane and into an adjacent lane, or during maneuvers such as merging or changing lanes. Sideswipes can happen at various speeds, from slow-moving traffic to highway speeds.

The severity of a sideswipe can range from minor cosmetic damage, such as scratched paint or dented panels, to more significant structural damage depending on the speed and the point of impact. Injuries can also occur, though they are typically less severe than in head-on or rear-end collisions, unless the impact is substantial.

Common contributing factors to sideswipes include driver inattention, such as texting or distractions, improper lane changes, and misjudging distances. Poor visibility due to weather conditions or at night can also play a role. In some cases, road design, such as narrow lanes or sharp curves, might increase the risk.

Preventing sideswipes involves maintaining a safe following distance, constantly checking mirrors and blind spots, using turn signals well in advance of a lane change, and avoiding distractions while driving. Drivers should also be aware of their vehicle's position within their lane and on the road.
