Sicherungsmutter

A Sicherungsmutter, often translated as a locking nut or security nut, is a type of fastener designed to resist loosening due to vibration or torque. Unlike standard nuts, Sicherungsmuttern incorporate features that create additional friction or a mechanical interlock to maintain their position on a threaded rod.

Several designs exist to achieve this locking effect. One common type is a jam nut, which is a thinner nut screwed tightly against a primary nut. The pressure between the two nuts increases friction, preventing the primary nut from turning. Another design is a self-locking nut, which often includes a nylon insert or a deformed thread. The nylon insert compresses against the bolt threads as the nut is tightened, creating resistance. Deformed thread nuts have a part of their threads intentionally distorted, which causes them to grip the bolt more tightly.

Sicherungsmuttern are crucial in applications where loosening of fasteners could lead to component failure or safety hazards. Examples include automotive components, machinery, and structural assemblies exposed to vibration. By preventing loosening, they enhance the reliability and safety of the assembly. The selection of the appropriate Sicherungsmutter depends on factors such as the expected vibration levels, temperature, and the required holding strength.
