Shuttlecocks

Shuttlecocks, also called shuttles or birdies, are the projectile used in the sport of badminton. They are designed to travel through the air with a stable, downward trajectory when struck by a racket, allowing for controlled shot placement and rally duration. The two main types are feathered and synthetic shuttlecocks.

Construction and design: A feathered shuttlecock consists of 16 feathers attached to a cork or composite base, forming a conical skirt that directs the airflow. The feathers are typically goose feathers, chosen for stiffness and flight consistency. Synthetic shuttlecocks use a molded plastic skirt and a cork or foam-based base. They are generally more durable and less sensitive to humidity and temperature than feathered shuttles.

Specifications and regulation: Competitive shuttles usually have 16 feathers arranged around the base, with a total length roughly in the 62 to 70 millimeter range and a weight around 4.7 to 5.5 grams. Shuttles are often categorized by speed, with classes such as slow, medium, and fast, to suit different playing conditions, altitudes, and tournament standards. Governing bodies such as the Badminton World Federation set official requirements for competition.

Usage and care: Feathered shuttlecocks are favored by higher-level play for feel and control but are more fragile and wear out quickly. Synthetic shuttles last longer and are common for practice and casual games. Proper storage in a cool, dry place and avoiding crushing the skirt help preserve performance.

Lifecycle and selection: Players choose shuttlecocks based on playing level, court conditions, and personal preference. Feathered shuttles offer a traditional feel, while synthetic variants provide durability and cost benefits for regular or group play.
