Shkaktues

Shkaktues is a term used in Albanian-language horticulture to refer to members of the plant family Cactaceae, commonly known in English as cacti. Shkaktues are a diverse group of succulent plants adapted to arid environments. A defining feature is the presence of areoles from which spines grow, and thick, fleshy stems that store water. Leaves are typically reduced to tiny scales or spines, and many species produce conspicuous flowers from the stem. The combination of water storage and spines helps shkaktues tolerate drought, intense sun, and high temperatures.

Taxonomy and diversity are centered in the family Cactaceae within the order Caryophyllales. The group includes numerous genera, with Opuntia (prickly pears), Mammillaria, Echinocactus, Ferocactus, and many others represented in cultivation and the wild. While most native ranges are in the Americas, shkaktues have been spread worldwide through horticulture and horticultural trade, adapting to a variety of climates when provided with well-draining soil and adequate light.

Ecology and habitat vary by species, from desert scrub to mountainous regions. In their native ecosystems, shkaktues may attract pollinators such as bees, bats, and moths, and some produce edible fruits. Spines offer defense and microhabitats for small organisms, while highlights like bright flowers contribute to their ecological roles.

Cultivation and care are common topics for enthusiasts. Requirements generally include bright light, well-draining soil, and careful watering practices to avoid root rot.
