Shivamogga

Shivamogga, also spelled Shimoga, is a city in the Indian state of Karnataka. It is the administrative headquarters of Shivamogga district and a major urban center in the Malnad region of the Western Ghats. Located on the banks of the Sharavathi River, the city serves as a commercial and educational hub for surrounding towns and rural areas.

The geography of the area features hilly terrain and dense forests. The climate is tropical with a pronounced monsoon season, bringing heavy rainfall to the region. Agriculture forms a cornerstone of the local economy, with crops such as areca nut, coconut, rice, and spices commonly cultivated in the surrounding taluks. The city also hosts small and medium-scale industries and services.

Shivamogga is known as a gateway to Malnad and serves as a base for accessing several natural and historic attractions. Jog Falls, one of India's highest waterfalls, lies nearby. Other points of interest include the Keladi Nayaka Palace ruins, the Kuvempu birthplace at Kuppali, and wildlife attractions such as the Tyavarekoppa Lion and Tiger Safari and the Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary in the district. Kannada is the predominant language, with a mix of other languages spoken by communities in the area. The city is connected by rail and road to Bengaluru, Mangaluru, Hubli, and other major centers, while the nearest airports are in Mangaluru and Hubli, with additional access via Bengaluru.
