Shepherdesses

A shepherdess is a person who tends, guards, and manages a flock of sheep, performing tasks such as guiding the flock to pasture, moving them between grazing areas, protecting them from predators, counting and recording animals, tagging, and, in some cases, milking or processing wool and dairy products. The term is used across cultures to describe women and girls who participate in shepherding, whether within family units, communities, or larger pastoral economies. The division of labor between men and women in shepherding varies by region, climate, and tradition, and in many societies women have contributed to both herding and related dairy activities.
