Shantaes

Shantae is a video game series developed by WayForward Technologies. The games follow the adventures of Shantae, a half-genie, half-human pirate dancer who can transform into various creatures and use magic to defend her home, Sequin Land, from evil. The first game, also titled Shantae, was released for the Game Boy Color in 2002. Despite critical acclaim, it was a commercial failure at the time.

The series gained a significant cult following and was later revived with the release of Shantae: Risky's Revenge for DSiWare in 2010, followed by Shantae and the Pirate's Curse (2014), Shantae: Half-Genie Hero (2016), and Shantae and the Seven Sirens (2019). Shantae's gameplay typically involves platforming, exploration, and combat. A core mechanic is Shantae's ability to transform into different animals, each with unique movement and combat abilities, allowing her to overcome obstacles and access new areas.

Shantae herself is known for her upbeat personality, her whip-like hair attacks, and her genie magic. The games often feature vibrant pixel art, catchy music, and a sense of humor. The series has received praise for its engaging gameplay, charming characters, and faithful adherence to the Metroidvania genre. Shantae has become a mascot for WayForward and a beloved character in indie gaming.
