Sfidsat

Sfidsat is a Norwegian word that combines the terms *sfidning* (challenge) and *sat* (satellite), referring to a series of small, experimental satellites developed by students at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). The project serves as an educational initiative to provide hands-on experience in satellite technology, aerospace engineering, and space mission operations.

The first satellite in the Sfidsat series, **Sfidsat-1**, was launched in 2017 as part of the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Fly Your Satellite! program. Weighing approximately 1 kilogram, it was deployed from the International Space Station (ISS) and operated in low Earth orbit (LEO). The mission aimed to demonstrate basic satellite functionality, including communication with ground stations and data transmission. Despite some technical challenges, the satellite successfully transmitted telemetry data for a short period before its orbit decayed.

Subsequent iterations of the Sfidsat program have focused on refining satellite design, improving reliability, and expanding mission objectives. **Sfidsat-2**, launched in 2020, incorporated lessons learned from the first mission and introduced new features such as improved power management and enhanced communication protocols. The satellite also carried a secondary payload for testing radiation effects on electronic components, contributing to research in space weather.

The Sfidsat project is overseen by NTNU’s Space Technology research group, which collaborates with industry partners and international organizations to support student-led innovation. Beyond technical development, the program emphasizes teamwork, problem-solving, and interdisciplinary collaboration, preparing participants for careers in aerospace and related fields. The initiative has been recognized for its contributions to space education and has inspired similar student satellite projects worldwide.

Sfidsat remains an active program, with ongoing efforts to develop future satellites that may explore advanced technologies, such as CubeSat-based scientific experiments or improved orbital debris monitoring. The project continues to serve as a platform for NTNU students to gain practical experience while advancing Norway’s presence in the global space community.
