Sevenspice

Sevenspice is a plant belonging to the genus Illicium, commonly known as star anise. It is distinct from the more widely recognized Illicium verum, which is the source of Chinese star anise. Sevenspice, scientifically named Illicium anisatum, is native to Japan and Korea. Its common name is derived from the characteristic seven-pointed star shape of its fruit, though the number of points can vary.

The aroma and flavor of sevenspice are similar to Chinese star anise, with a strong licorice-like scent due to the presence of anethole. However, sevenspice is significantly more toxic than its Chinese counterpart. The primary toxic compound is anisatin, which can cause convulsions, nausea, vomiting, and other severe neurological symptoms if ingested. Due to this toxicity, sevenspice is generally not used for culinary purposes, especially not as a direct substitute for edible star anise.

Despite its toxicity, sevenspice has had traditional uses. In Japan, its wood has been burned as incense for its pleasant aroma, and it has also been used in traditional medicine, albeit with caution. The plant itself is an evergreen shrub or small tree, typically reaching heights of up to 15 meters. Its leaves are leathery and lance-shaped, and its flowers are pale yellow to greenish. Sevenspice is cultivated in some regions, primarily for ornamental purposes and for its traditional non-culinary uses. Its distinctive star-shaped fruit is often collected and used in dried floral arrangements and potpourri, further contributing to its name and recognition.
