Serviceorientated is an adjective describing an approach that structures software systems and business processes around services—modular units that expose well-defined interfaces and can be composed to deliver higher-level functionality. In software engineering, the term is closely associated with service-oriented architecture (SOA), where discrete capabilities are provided as interoperable services over a network. In business contexts, the term can refer to a strategy that prioritizes the design and delivery of services that meet customer needs. The spelling service-oriented or service-orientated is more common in many regions, but serviceorientated is widely understood in technical discussions.

Core principles include loose coupling between services, explicit service contracts, service abstraction, discoverability, reusability, and interoperability across heterogeneous systems. Services are typically designed to be stateless, composable, and platform-agnostic, allowing them to be orchestrated into workflows or business processes through central or distributed governance.

Benefits include greater flexibility to adapt to changing requirements, easier integration of diverse systems, reuse of existing functionality, and potential parallel development. Challenges include added governance overhead, security and compliance concerns, performance and latency costs, complexity of service versioning, and managing data consistency across services.

SOA and serviceorientation have influenced modern architectural patterns such as microservices and API-driven ecosystems. While related, microservices often emphasize small, independently deployable services and decentralized data management. Tools and practices commonly used in serviceorientation include service catalogs, contracts, governance models, and API management.
