Sericulus

Sericulus is a genus of insects belonging to the order Coleoptera, commonly known as beetles. The genus currently contains two recognized species: Sericulus castaneus and Sericulus melanocephalus. Both species are native to Australia.

Sericulus castaneus, also known as the brown cockchafer, is characterized by its reddish-brown coloration. Sericulus melanocephalus, or the black-headed cockchafer, is distinguished by a black head contrasting with its otherwise reddish-brown body. These beetles are typically found in coastal and subcoastal regions of eastern Australia.

Adult Sericulus beetles are often observed feeding on the foliage of various plants, including eucalypts and acacias. Their larval stages, like many scarab beetles, are grub-like and live in the soil, where they feed on plant roots. This root-feeding behavior can sometimes lead to them being considered pests in agricultural or horticultural settings, although their impact can vary.

The life cycle of Sericulus involves egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The adults are generally active during the warmer months.
