Seongnam

Seongnam is a city in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, part of the Seoul Capital Area. It lies to the southeast of Seoul and is divided into three administrative districts: Bundang-gu, Sujeong-gu, and Jungwon-gu. The city functions as a major residential and commercial hub for the surrounding region, with a diverse economy and growing urban development.

Historically, the area was rural land within Gyeonggi Province. It developed rapidly as a planned satellite city from the late 1980s onward, with Bundang New Town serving as a flagship project to accommodate Seoul’s housing demand. In recent decades, Pangyo in Bundang has emerged as a prominent technology and business district, contributing to the city’s economic profile.

The local economy blends technology, services, and retail. Pangyo Tech Valley hosts numerous startups and technology firms, while Seongnam supports cultural and recreational amenities. Notable institutions include Seongnam Arts Center, a major venue for performing arts and exhibitions, and a range of parks and public spaces. The city is also home to Seongnam FC, a professional football club that competes in the K League and reflects the city’s sporting culture.

Transportation infrastructure connects Seongnam to Seoul and other parts of the region. The city is served by the Seoul Metropolitan Subway network, including the Bundang Line, along with bus networks and access to major expressways.
