Sensorimotoriska, often rendered as sensorimotor in English, refers to the integrated functions of sensing and acting that enable perception-guided movement. The term describes how sensory information from the body and the environment informs motor planning, coordination, and execution, and how motor actions in turn alter sensory feedback. This integration underpins everyday activities such as reaching for an object, maintaining balance, and adapting to new tasks.

The core components include sensory receptors and pathways (somatosensory, visual, vestibular), brain networks that integrate this input (notably the parietal cortex and premotor areas), and the systems responsible for movement execution (the primary motor cortex, cerebellum, and basal ganglia). Proprioception—the sense of body position—plays a crucial role by providing ongoing feedback about limb and body configuration. Efficient sensorimotor processing relies on accurate timing, coordination, and error correction through continuous feedback loops.

Functions of sensorimotor integration encompass posture and balance, locomotion, object manipulation, and the timing and sequencing of movements. Sensorimotor learning occurs through practice and experience, supported by neuroplastic changes that optimize pathways for specific tasks. Techniques such as motor imagery and action observation can enhance learning by engaging sensorimotor circuits without overt movement.

Clinical relevance includes a range of disorders where sensory and motor systems fail to coordinate effectively, such as apraxia, ataxia, or proprioceptive deficits. Rehabilitation emphasizes sensorimotor integration through therapy, occupational and physical therapy, task-specific training, and, in some cases, neurostimulation or assistive devices to restore function and adaptability.
