Semisterile

Semisterile is an adjective used in biology to describe partial sterility: an organism, line, or population that produces fewer viable gametes or offspring than a fully fertile reference. The term is informal and not tied to a universal numerical threshold; what counts as semisterile varies by species and context. It is important to distinguish semisterile from complete sterility (no viable gametes) and from subfertility (reduced fertility without a clear cut-off in gamete viability).

Causes and occurrence vary by organism. In plants, semisterility often arises from chromosomal imbalances, heterozygous incompatibilities between parental genomes, or cytoplasmic factors that reduce but do not abolish gamete function. In breeding programs, semisterility can complicate hybrid production or be exploited to maintain heterozygosity. In animals and insects, partial sterility may result from genetic incompatibilities, environmental stress, infections, or age, producing a mix of viable and non-viable gametes or offspring.

Measurement and interpretation also depend on context. Researchers describe semisterility by reporting relative pollen viability, seed set per flower, or progeny viability compared with a fertile control. Because definitions are context-dependent, the term is most meaningful when paired with explicit quantitative metrics such as percentage of viable pollen or seeds produced.

Semisterility thus represents a gradation between full fertility and complete sterility, signaling partial impairment of reproductive capability that can be important in genetics, plant and animal breeding, and studies of reproductive biology.
