Semifreedom

Semifreedom is a philosophical and political concept that describes a state of partial or limited freedom, characterized by a combination of autonomous and controlled elements within a society or individual life. The term is often used to critique or analyze governance models, social structures, or personal conditions where complete liberty is constrained by rules, regulations, or external forces, yet some degree of independence remains.

Historically, semifreedom has been associated with transitional or hybrid regimes that lie between fully free democracies and authoritarian states. Such regimes may feature democratic appearances or institutions that are undermined by authoritarian practices, resulting in a situation where citizens enjoy certain rights but are also subject to significant restrictions.
