Self-reorganizing describes systems that rearrange their internal structure or organization spontaneously in response to changing conditions, without centralized control. This property arises when local interactions and feedback mechanisms drive global adaptation, often producing emergent order from simple rules.

Mechanisms include local decision rules, diffusion of information or resources, reinforcing feedback, and selection among competing configurations. In many cases the process is iterative and stochastic, allowing the system to explore configurations and settle into attractor states that optimize certain objectives such as efficiency, resilience, or coverage. Self-reorganization can be facilitated by learning, adaptation, and modularity, enabling parts of a system to rewire, reallocate roles, or reconfigure connections.

Applications and examples span natural and engineered domains. Natural self-reorganization occurs in social insects reorganizing nests, immune systems adapting to pathogens, and ecological networks adjusting to disturbances. In technology, self-organizing maps are neural-network models that organize high-dimensional data into a lower-dimensional representation. Self-organizing lists reorder elements based on access patterns to improve efficiency. Self-reconfiguring modular robotics use actuated modules that physically reassemble into new structures for different tasks. Adaptive networks reorganize connectivity to respond to failures or changing loads.

Challenges include predictability, control, and safety concerns, since outcomes can be sensitive to initial conditions and may not be fully controllable. Studied within complex systems theory, self-reorganization highlights how simple local rules can yield robust, scalable, adaptive behavior.
