Selfreleases are releases of creative works directly by the creator or their team without involvement from a traditional label, publisher, or distributor. The term is most commonly used in music but can apply to writing, film, or software released without a publishing deal. Self-releases give creators ownership and control over content, timing, packaging, and marketing, while bearing responsibility for production and distribution.

The rise of digital recording, affordable production, and online platforms reduced barriers to independent release. Crowdfunding and direct-to-fan marketing let artists fund and promote projects without a label. Platforms such as Bandcamp popularized self-releases, and distribution services like DistroKid, TuneCore, and CD Baby place music on streaming services and stores without a traditional deal.

Process: finalize the work, secure necessary rights, and prepare metadata. Upload to a distribution service, select streaming and storefront platforms, and set a release date and price. Promote via social media and newsletters; sell directly on the artist’s site or Bandcamp. Physical releases require manufacturing and fulfillment logistics.

Economics and legal: royalties from digital sales and streaming go to the creator after distributor and platform fees. Licensing deals for film, TV, or ads can provide additional revenue. Copyright typically remains with the creator; covers require appropriate licenses from the original rights holder.

Advantages include greater artistic control and a larger share of revenue, while challenges include a heavier workload, marketing responsibilities, and the difficulty of discovery without a label. Self-releases require careful management of rights, distribution timelines, and audience engagement.
