Selfpropelled

Self-propelled refers to any device that propels itself using its own power source rather than being moved by an external mechanism. It applies to land, water, and air systems that carry an onboard engine or motor and a propulsion system.

In military contexts, self-propelled weapons are mounted on mobile platforms with integrated propulsion and the weapon system. Self-propelled artillery and self-propelled anti-aircraft guns are typical examples; modern tanks are also self-propelled fighting vehicles. In civilian use, self-propelled machines include agricultural harvesters such as combines, construction equipment like self-propelled graders, and other machinery such as lawn mowers and snow blowers.

Key design traits include the on-board powerplant, drivetrain and transmission, and an integrated propulsion method (internal combustion, electric, or hybrid). The vehicle’s weight, power output, traction (tracked or wheeled), and steering mechanism influence mobility and stability. Self-propelled systems differ from towed or hauled equipment, which require an external source of movement.

History and scope: The concept emerged with the development of powered, mobile platforms in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, evolving from steam and internal-combustion designs to modern diesel-electric and hybrid configurations. In warfare, self-propelled platforms allowed on-board mobility, firepower, and rapid redeployment. Today, autonomous and remotely operated self-propelled systems extend the idea into robotics and unmanned vehicles, spanning industrial, agricultural, and military domains.
