Sekoitusastian

Sekoitusastian, the genitive form of the Finnish term sekoitusastia, refers to a mixing container used to blend liquids, powders, and emulsions. The base term sekoitusastia combines sekoitus (mixing) and astia (container), and is widely used in Finnish industry and science. In practice, a sekoitusastian can be any vessel or tank designed to allow agitation, blending, or reaction of contents, and is employed across laboratories and industries such as chemical processing, food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and paints.

Vessels vary in size from bench-top beakers to industrial-scale reactors, with volumes from a few hundred milliliters to thousands of liters. Materials commonly used include stainless steel (304/316), borosilicate glass, and high-performance polymers such as HDPE, selected for chemical compatibility, hygiene, and thermal properties. Design features may include an agitator or mixer shaft, baffles, vents, seals, and temperature-control jackets or heating/cooling coils. Some sekoitusastiat are jacketed for precise temperature management, while others are open-top for easy access.

Applications include mixing and homogenization of liquids and powders, emulsification, dispersion, and, in some configurations, chemical reactions. In pharmaceutical and food industries, sanitary design and cleanability are critical, prompting adherence to GMP and sanitary standards, as well as CIP/SIP capabilities.

In practice, a sekoitusastian can be a standalone vessel or part of a larger mixing or reaction system, depending on process requirements.
