Seiastes

Seiastes is a genus of small, often brightly colored fish belonging to the family Pomacentridae, commonly known as damselfish. These fish are predominantly found in the Indo-Pacific region, inhabiting coral reefs and rocky substrates. They are typically characterized by their compressed bodies, single dorsal fin, and often prominent eye.

The genus Seiastes includes a limited number of species, and their specific distributions can vary. They are generally benthic, meaning they live on or near the bottom of the ocean. Seiastes species are omnivorous, feeding on a diet that includes algae, small invertebrates, and zooplankton. Like many damselfish, they are known for their territorial behavior, especially during breeding seasons.

Reproduction in Seiastes typically involves external fertilization, with males often guarding the eggs until they hatch. The juveniles are usually planktonic for a period before settling into their adult habitats. While not as extensively studied as some other damselfish genera, Seiastes contributes to the biodiversity of coral reef ecosystems. Their small size and often reclusive nature can make them challenging to observe in their natural environment.
