Sehnenscheidenentzündungen, also known as tenosynovitis, refers to the inflammation of a tendon sheath. A tendon sheath is a lubricating tunnel that surrounds a tendon, allowing it to glide smoothly through the body. When this sheath becomes inflamed, it can cause pain, swelling, and restricted movement in the affected area.

Common causes of tenosynovitis include repetitive movements, overuse of a particular body part, direct injury, and certain medical conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or gout. Occupations or hobbies that involve frequent and strenuous use of the hands, wrists, elbows, or feet are often associated with this condition. For instance, prolonged typing, playing musical instruments, or engaging in certain sports can increase the risk.

Symptoms typically include a dull ache or sharp pain that worsens with movement, a grating or crackling sensation as the tendon moves within its sheath (crepitus), swelling, and tenderness around the affected joint. In some cases, a visible swelling or lump may form.

Diagnosis is usually made based on a physical examination and the patient's medical history. Imaging tests like ultrasound or MRI may be used in more complex cases to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other conditions.

Treatment aims to reduce inflammation and pain, and restore function. This often involves rest for the affected limb, ice application, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Physical therapy may be recommended to help regain strength and flexibility. In severe or persistent cases, corticosteroid injections or even surgery to release the constricted sheath might be considered. Prevention strategies focus on avoiding repetitive motions, using proper ergonomics, and incorporating stretching and strengthening exercises.
