Sedimentlast

Sedimentlast is a term used in sedimentology and stratigraphy to denote the youngest sedimentary unit in a stratigraphic sequence. It represents the last material deposited before a change in depositional conditions, a hiatus, or the present day. The concept serves as a practical label for anchoring recent stratigraphic boundaries within a basin or landscape.

Its position is typically at the uppermost part of a depositional sequence, and it may be overlain by an unconformity, soil formation, or a non-depositional layer. The identification of a sedimentlast relies on integrated facies analysis, stratigraphic correlation, and, when possible, absolute dating. Because deposition can be inherited or reworked, the sedimentlast boundary may be diachronous across a region, requiring careful cross-section comparisons.
