Sebességfokozat, often translated as "gear" or "speed gear" in English, refers to a specific ratio within a transmission system. In vehicles, this system, typically a gearbox, allows the engine's power to be delivered to the wheels at different rotational speeds and torque levels. Each sebességfokozat represents a distinct mechanical configuration that alters the relationship between the engine's output shaft speed and the output shaft speed that drives the wheels.

Lower sebességfokozatok, such as first gear, provide higher torque for starting from a standstill or climbing steep inclines, but at the cost of lower speed. As the vehicle accelerates, higher sebességfokozatok are engaged. These offer lower torque but allow for higher road speeds with a given engine RPM.
