Seaocean

Seaocean is not a standard term in oceanography or geography. In contemporary writing, it is often used poetically or in branding to evoke the marine realm as a single, interconnected system that spans both seas and oceans. The phrase emphasizes the continuity of saltwater environments across the globe rather than a strict scientific category.

Geographic and physical context defines the seaocean concept loosely. The world’s oceans—the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern, and Arctic—form the largest continuous bodies of saltwater and cover about 71% of Earth’s surface. Seas are smaller bodies of saltwater, usually partially enclosed by land, and they interact with the larger oceans through straits, channels, and deep-water exchanges. Differences in depth, salinity, temperature, and circulation exist within both oceans and seas, but currents and mixing connect them into a broader marine system.

Ecology and resources are central to any discussion of the seaocean. Marine life ranges from microscopic plankton to large dolphins and whales, with ecosystems such as coral reefs, seagrass meadows, and kelp forests spanning coastal seas to open-ocean habitats. Human activities—fishing, shipping, energy extraction, and tourism—depend on the seaocean while also impacting it. Climate change, including warming, acidification, and sea-level rise, along with pollution and overfishing, threatens marine biodiversity and ecosystem services.

In use, the term seaocean serves as a general, nontechnical way to reference the combined marine environment. Scientists prefer established terms like ocean or sea to specify precise bodies of water, while policymakers may adopt the broader concept for integrated marine management and education.
