Scrooged

Scrooged is a 1988 American Christmas comedy-drama film directed by Richard Donner and starring Bill Murray. The film is a modern adaptation of Charles Dickens' 1843 novel A Christmas Carol, with Murray playing Frank Cross, a cynical and selfish television executive. Cross is a success in his career but alienates everyone around him with his ruthless business practices and disdain for the Christmas spirit.

On Christmas Eve, as Frank is preparing to broadcast a live, cynical adaptation of A Christmas Carol, he is visited by the ghost of his deceased former partner, Lew Hayward. Lew warns Frank that he will be visited by three spirits who will show him his past, present, and future, in the hope of changing his ways. The first spirit, the Ghost of Christmas Past, shows Frank his childhood and the formative experiences that led him to become so embittered. The Ghost of Christmas Present reveals the joy and generosity he is missing out on in the lives of his employees and the family of his kind-hearted assistant, Claire. Finally, the Ghost of Christmas Future shows Frank a bleak and lonely future if he continues on his current path, including his own funeral attended by no one.

These encounters ultimately lead Frank to a profound realization and a desire to change. He decides to embrace the Christmas spirit, much to the surprise and confusion of his colleagues. The film concludes with Frank attempting to make amends for his past behavior and genuinely connect with the people in his life. Scrooged was a commercial success and has become a popular, albeit dark, Christmas film.
