Scratchplates
A scratchplate, also known as a pickguard, is a piece of material, typically plastic, used to protect the body of a stringed instrument, most commonly a guitar or bass guitar, from scratches caused by the instrument's strings or a plectrum (pick). Scratchplates are often fitted underneath the strings and in the area where a player would typically strum or pluck. Their primary function is protective, preventing wear and tear on the instrument's finish.
In addition to their protective role, scratchplates can also contribute to the aesthetic appeal of an instrument.
