Design and features vary by school and age group, but common elements include paved areas for ball games and promenades, playground equipment for younger students, sports courts, seating, trees or gardens, and sheltered zones for rest or weather inclemency. Many modern Schulhöfe emphasize accessibility and safety, with clear sightlines for supervision, barrier-free paths, non-slip surfaces, and age-appropriate play installations. In recent years the concept of a Grüner Schulhof (green schoolyard) has gained prominence, integrating vegetation, water features, and permeable pavements to reduce heat and manage rainwater more effectively.

Historically, Schulhöfe were often large paved spaces primarily used for physical activity and as a practical area for large student groups. Since the late 20th century, renovation and new constructions increasingly prioritized diverse, inclusive, and climate-resilient designs, sometimes incorporating outdoor classrooms, study corners, and flexible zones that can be used for assemblies or collaborative projects.
