Schnellbahn
Schnellbahn, literally “fast railway,” is a term used in German-speaking regions to describe fast urban or suburban rail services that connect metropolitan centers with outer areas more rapidly than traditional local trains. The designation denotes lines and services designed for higher speeds and longer distances than conventional local rail, typically featuring relatively frequent service and some degree of grade separation from other traffic. In practice, the Schnellbahn concept has largely been superseded by the more widely used term S-Bahn, although the older designation persists in historical documents and in certain regional contexts, particularly in Austria.
