Schlüsseltypen refer to the different categories or classifications of keys, primarily in the context of security and access control. These can be broadly categorized based on their physical form, function, or the system they are designed to operate.

A common distinction is between physical keys and digital keys. Physical keys are tangible objects, typically made of metal, that are inserted into a lock mechanism to operate it. Examples include traditional house keys, car keys, and padlock keys. These keys often have unique profiles or cuts that correspond to the internal tumblers of a specific lock.

Digital keys, on the other hand, are not physical objects but rather electronic credentials or codes used to grant access. This can include key cards used for hotel rooms or office buildings, RFID fobs, or even software-based keys like those used for digital rights management or secure network access. Mobile keys, which utilize smartphones via technologies like Bluetooth or NFC, are an increasingly prevalent form of digital key.

Further classifications can be made based on their purpose. Master keys are designed to open multiple different locks, often within a hierarchical system, while sub-master keys open a subset of these. Change keys are used to re-key locks, altering the pins so that a new key becomes the only one that can operate it. Skeleton keys are a more rudimentary type of key, often used historically, with a simplified structure designed to bypass simpler lock mechanisms. In computing, a key refers to a piece of information used in cryptography, such as a public key or private key for encryption and decryption.
