Scheinwerferlinsen

Scheinwerferlinsen are the transparent covers of automotive headlights that protect the lamp and contribute to forming the emitted beam. They are usually made from polycarbonate (PC) due to its high impact resistance and heat tolerance, though older or specialty lenses may use PMMA. Most modern lenses are injection-molded PC and receive UV-stabilizing coatings to prevent yellowing and hazing over time. Some high-end units combine lenses with microstructured inner surfaces to shape light more precisely.

As part of the front light module, the lens seals the interior from dust and moisture while influencing the beam pattern. In reflector-based headlights, the lens helps to distribute light from the bulb; in projector systems, a dedicated projector lens or optic works with a glass- or plastic-encased element to achieve a defined cut-off and intensity distribution.

Surface design includes outer surfaces that are clear and smooth and inner microstructures or patterns that guide light. The choice of materials and patterns affects durability, optical quality and glare control.

Maintenance and aging: Exposure to UV light, heat and road grime can cause yellowing, hazing or micro-scratches. Cleaning and polishing can restore clarity, and protective coatings or headlight restoration products are commonly used. Significant damage usually requires replacement of the entire lens or headlight unit.

Regulatory and disposal: Lenses and headlight assemblies must comply with local lighting regulations (such as ECE or DOT standards) and be replacement parts with homologation. They are typically recycled with other automotive plastics where facilities permit.
