Schakellast

Schakellast, also known as a switching load or switching duty, refers to the maximum current or power that an electrical switch, contactor, or relay can safely handle when repeatedly opening and closing a circuit. This concept is crucial in electrical engineering and automation, as switches are subjected to mechanical and thermal stress during operation, which can lead to wear and tear or failure if the load exceeds the device’s rated capacity.

The schakellast is typically specified by manufacturers and is influenced by factors such as the material and construction of the contacts, the voltage level, and the frequency of switching. For example, a switch designed for low-voltage applications may handle a higher current than one used in high-voltage systems due to differences in arcing and contact erosion. Additionally, the type of load—such as resistive, inductive, or capacitive—affects the schakellast, as inductive loads generate high transient currents during switching, increasing stress on the contacts.

Proper selection of a switch or relay based on its schakellast ensures reliable performance and longevity. Undersizing a switch can lead to premature failure, while oversizing may result in unnecessary cost.
