Schakelkabel

Schakelkabel is a type of electrical cable used to connect switching devices with lighting fittings in domestic or commercial electrical installations. It is designed for carrying live electrical current between a switch and a luminaire or between other control devices, such as dimmers or relays.

Construction and variants: It is typically a flexible, multi-core cable with two or three insulated copper conductors inside a flexible outer sheath. The cable is rated for household voltages and is available in various conductor sizes, commonly from about 0.75 mm2 up to 1.5 mm2 for lighting circuits. The cores are color coded according to local standards, with the outer sheath made of PVC or similar insulation. Some variants provide extra protection for installations that require a higher degree of flexibility or fire resistance.

Applications and installation context: Primarily used for connecting a wall switch to a ceiling fixture or between other nearby control devices. It is typically installed within walls, conduits, or along fixed structures, and should not be exposed to damp conditions unless rated for such environments. In many switch-drop arrangements the neutral may not be present in the switch cable, with the neutral remaining at the fixture. Schakelkabel is more flexible than fixed wiring and is intended for interconnections rather than permanent distribution.

Safety and standards: Work involving schakelkabel should be carried out by qualified electricians in accordance with local electrical codes. Damaged cables must be replaced. The cable should be secured and routed to avoid physical damage and overheating, and termination must be proper at switches and luminaires.
