Saugfähig

Saugfähig describes the ability of a material to absorb liquids or moisture. It is determined by the material’s porosity, pore size distribution, capillarity, surface energy and hydrophilicity, and it refers to absorption into the bulk rather than mere surface wetting. The property is relevant for a wide range of materials, including textiles, paper, foams, wood, ceramics, filters and soils. A high Saugfähigkeit means the material can take up relatively large amounts of liquid per unit mass, while a low Saugfähigkeit indicates greater resistance to liquid uptake.

Measurement and expression of Saugfähigkeit typically involve gravimetric methods (weighing before and after immersion) or capillarity tests. Results are often given as the amount of liquid absorbed per unit mass (for example, grams of liquid per gram of dry material) and as an absorption rate over time. In related contexts, moisture uptake at a specified relative humidity is described by terms such as moisture regain or sorption isotherms. Hygroscopicity, the uptake of moisture from air, is related but distinct from Saugfähigkeit for liquids.

Applications and implications: In textiles, Saugfähigkeit affects comfort, dye uptake and performance under use. In paper and packaging, it influences ink spread, feels, and strength. In wood and ceramics, it governs drying behavior, dimensional stability and durability. Material processing and surface treatments can modify Saugfähigkeit, for example through porosity changes or hydrophilic/hydrophobic alterations, to suit specific performance requirements.
