Satisficingajatteluun, a Finnish term, describes a decision-making strategy where individuals aim to find a solution that is "good enough" rather than striving for the absolute optimal or best possible outcome. This approach contrasts with maximizing, which involves extensive search and evaluation to identify the most advantageous choice. Satisficing is often employed when faced with complex problems, limited time, or insufficient information, as it conserves cognitive resources.

The concept was introduced by psychologist Herbert Simon. He argued that human decision-making is often bounded by rationality, meaning that our ability to process information and foresee all consequences is limited. In such situations, satisficing becomes a practical and efficient strategy. Instead of exhaustively exploring all possibilities, individuals set a minimum threshold of acceptability. Once a choice meets this threshold, the search for alternatives ceases, and that option is selected.

Examples of satisficing can be observed in everyday life. When grocery shopping, a person might choose the first brand of cereal that meets their basic criteria for price and flavor, rather than comparing every available option. Similarly, when looking for a job, an individual might accept the first offer that provides adequate salary and benefits, rather than waiting for a potentially better, but uncertain, opportunity. While satisficing can lead to quick decisions, it might occasionally result in missing out on more favorable outcomes. However, it is a widely used cognitive heuristic that allows individuals to navigate a complex world effectively.
