Sappikivet

Sappikivet, also known as gallstones, are hardened deposits that form within the gallbladder. The gallbladder is a small organ located beneath the liver, responsible for storing and releasing bile, a digestive fluid. Sappikivet can vary in size, from as small as a grain of sand to as large as a golf ball. They are typically composed of cholesterol, bile pigments, or a combination of both.

The formation of sappikivet is not fully understood, but several factors are believed to contribute. These include an imbalance in the chemical composition of bile, such as having too much cholesterol or bilirubin, or the gallbladder not emptying properly. Certain risk factors are associated with an increased likelihood of developing sappikivet, including obesity, rapid weight loss, a diet high in fat and cholesterol, age, gender (women are more prone than men), and genetic predisposition.

Many individuals with sappikivet experience no symptoms. However, when sappikivet obstruct the flow of bile, they can cause significant pain, often referred to as a gallbladder attack. This pain is typically felt in the upper right abdomen and may radiate to the back or shoulder. Other symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, indigestion, and jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes) if the bile ducts become blocked. Diagnosis is usually made through imaging tests such as ultrasound. Treatment options depend on the presence and severity of symptoms, and may range from watchful waiting to surgical removal of the gallbladder (cholecystectomy).
