Sampleriinstrumentit, commonly known as samplers, are electronic musical instruments that use recorded sound samples as their sound source. Instead of generating sound through oscillators or synthesis, samplers capture snippets of audio from external sources – be it a real instrument, a voice, or even environmental sounds – and store them digitally. These stored samples can then be triggered and manipulated by a keyboard, sequencer, or other control interface, allowing musicians to play back and creatively alter the recorded sounds.

The fundamental process involves recording a sound, digitizing it, and then assigning it to specific keys or control events. When a key is pressed, the sampler retrieves the corresponding digital sample and plays it back. The playback can be modified in numerous ways. Common manipulations include changing the pitch (transposition), altering the playback speed, looping sections of the sample, and applying various audio effects like filtering, envelopes, and modulation. This versatility allows a single sampler to emulate a wide range of instruments or create entirely new sonic textures.

Early samplers were often hardware-based units with limited memory and processing power. However, with advancements in digital technology, software samplers have become prevalent. These are virtual instruments that run on computers and offer extensive sample storage, sophisticated editing capabilities, and integration with digital audio workstations (DAWs). Samplers have played a significant role in the evolution of many music genres, from hip-hop and electronic music to film scoring and experimental sound design, providing musicians with a powerful tool for sonic exploration and creative expression.
