Saltgrass

Saltgrass is the common name for several halophytic grasses, most notably Distichlis spicata. It is a perennial species known for its tolerance of high soil salinity and periodic flooding, and it often grows in dense, clonal stands that spread by creeping rhizomes.

Distribution and habitat

Saltgrass is native to North America and is found along coastal salt marshes, tidal flats, saline inland wetlands, and other saline or brackish environments. It can tolerate brackish water and fluctuating water levels, and it commonly establishes in disturbed or degraded saline soils where other vegetation is limited. In many regions it plays a key role in dune stabilization and wetland restoration.

Description

Saltgrass is a low-growing, grass-like plant with slender, blue-green leaves arranged along upright stems. The leaves are linear, fairly stiff, and can tolerate repeated submergence by saltwater. The inflorescence consists of small spikelets arranged in loose or compact panicles. The plant reproduces both by seeds and vegetative spread through its rhizomes, enabling rapid colonization of suitable saline sites.

Ecology and uses

As a halophyte, saltgrass contributes to shoreline stabilization and habitat structure for wildlife, including waterfowl and shorebirds. Its tolerance to salinity makes it a valuable species in saline land reclamation and habitat restoration projects. For forage, saltgrass can be utilized in some salt-tolerant pastures, though its salt content can limit palatability for many livestock. It is also employed in landscaping and coastal revegetation where salt exposure is a concern.
